more help...

It would be nice if the help pages were filled with useful content... Also, maybe a link to the [categories (http://www.wikidweb.com/index.php?title=Special:Categories)] on the main page would be helpful. Right now, I have to click on the "random page" link to get to a page that has the Categories link on it. Unless there's something I missed (?)

Anyway. Good luck developing this wikidweb project. I hope it will be less spam-prone (read: better looked-after) than trulyopendirectory.com For starters this one LOOKS a lot better :-)

Cheers. 212.238.236.103 13:04, 14 Jan 2005 (PST)

Good Feedback Thanks, point well taken about the categories, and also about the help - I'm whittling away at that. Honestly, this is still in it's infancy, but I'm positive this is better in some areas where wiki-based directories are doing wrong.
I saw what you did with the <urltags>, and I think I can guess why - for better search engine optimization. I was hoping to keep the main fields in XML style tags, for future development. Perhaps I should add another field, like url-summary? Well, thanks for coming, and I'm glad you liked what you saw.

Perhaps also as part of the 'help' pages, I suggest an FAQ page. Here's some questions (OK so they're not haven't been 'frequently asked' but you get the idea):

  • What is wikidweb?
  • Is this the same as the 'open directory project'?
  • Can anyone add a website to this directory?
  • Should I add my website to this directory?
    • Can I add my homepage?
    • Can I add my business/commercial page?
    • Can I add porno websites?
    • Can I add illegal websites e.g. warez/mp3 download links?
    • Can I add other people's websites?
  • What information should I provide?
  • Do I have to provide a detailed description?
  • How can I categorize a website?
  • Why should I add a website to this directory?
    • Will it help my search engine rankings?
  • What else can I do to help?
  • Can I copy these listings?

Most of the questions have obvious answers... others I'm wondering about myself. -- HarryWood 16:55, 8 May 2005 (PDT)

Thanks for the input Harry. Aerik, the site's owner, is away this week and I'm minding the site. I think these are all excellent points and I'm sure he will address these upon his return. Remember, one of the really cool things about the wiki model, is anyone can create content.
I will try to start something with this as time permits this week.

How do I delete parked sites (or other sites for that matter)

What's the approved way to remove no value sites like Www.supply-and-demand-tool.com which are simply parked, ad-click gathering sites. ?
Same question for no longer existant sites. --Wikikiwi 21:57, 23 Oct 2006 (MDT)

I agree. I have found many redirected or parked sites listed here. This seems to undermine the integrity of this directory. We not only need ways to delete these sites--we need ways to delete them ASAP. Cazort 16:32, 28 Sep 2009 (PDT)
What I recommend is to remove the listing and replace it with a description of what was wrong with the entry ("Parked site - declined" or "MFA site - declined", etc) then categorize it with [[Category:Declined Listings]]... If the author contests it, then a discussion can ensue on the talk page... --Aerik Sylvan 09:28, 1 Oct 2009 (PDT)
Thanks; this makes sense. I think it would be useful to have some help documentation on this, or more direct links to it...maybe I could work on this. Also another question...after we post enough stuff, can we remove the automatic captcha? It is getting annoying.  :-) Cazort 15:11, 4 Oct 2009 (PDT)

How do I add my website

Hi Aerik, I have been trying to add my website in this directory but when I enter my website url it gave me error that this is not a valid website URL. My website URL is (link blocked - not on whitelist) could u please check whats wrong with this. Please help me.

Thank you for providing us such a tremendous plateform.

Mara Samuel

Hi, your site is sending a header of "403 Forbidden" back to the directory when it tries to validate the url. I looked at it using a different tool, and got a 200, so it probably just doesn't like the directory's user agent or soemthing. I've gone ahead and manually added it here: Myweightlossexperience.com --Aerik Sylvan 08:57, 18 Dec 2006 (MST)

Added sub-category by mistake

Hi I added a new category for student travel. And then, somehow, I added student travel as a sub-category of student travel. Don't know how to remove it. sorry.

Looks like Jbergerot took care of it... thanks for letting us know. --Aerik Sylvan 19:47, 28 Jun 2007 (PDT)

Webdirectories -> www.searchjohn.com not listed

Hi,

I try to add www.searchjohn.com to:

http://www.wikidweb.com/index.php?title=Category:Website_Directories&from=Metropolisdirectory.com

I have already added the entry to

http://www.wikidweb.com/wiki/User:Searchjohn

but we cannot see the entry. please help us how get it listed.

SearchJohn.com is a Search Engine and a Directory, but because the search engine database is not yet running we list the website under "web directories" at the moment.

Cheers Tom--Searchjohn 19:13, 1 Jan 2008 (PST)

Hi! You don't "add a listing to a category" - you create a listing then categorize it. Please read Help:Add an entry. Thanks --Aerik Sylvan 21:28, 1 Jan 2008 (PST)

I'm having trouble adding an internal page link to my site. I tried the internal page icon but I must be missing something. The page is www.my web name.com/polo-shirts.htm and the page is titled Custom Embroidered Polo Shirts. How do I accomplish this? Thanks!

categorie

how do i find the correct categorie to add my website is it is solar energy products for home

You can Browse through categories to find one that looks good - if you don't find any that seem appropriate, you can create one. --Aerik Sylvan 09:24, 1 Oct 2009 (PDT)
