North America is a 9,351,970 square mile continent, located in the northern part of the Western Hemisphere. To the east lies the North Atlantic Ocean and to the west lies the North Pacific Ocean. The Arctic Ocean is situated to the north; the continent of South America connects to North America at the narrow Isthmus of Panama. North America's 2001 population was estimated at 490,780,000.
